A global symbol of sustainability, Costa Rica is not limited to responsible tourism. The country has transformed its natural wealth into a driver of exemplary development, based on renewable energy, biodiversity preservation, and a long-term political vision.
Almost 100% renewable energy
Since the early 2010s, Costa Rica has regularly exceeded 98% of its electricity coming from renewable sources. This result places it alongside pioneering countries such as Norway, Scotland, and Uruguay among the cleanest nations in the world (source: Climate Council, 2019).
Natural energy diversity
This success is based on an ingenious combination of local resources:
67.5% of energy comes from large dams and hydroelectric projects.
17% of energy comes from wind farms located in the windiest regions of the country.
13.5% of energy comes from geothermal sources, harnessing heat from volcanoes and the subsoil.
0.84% biomass and solar energy from sectors that are still developing but show great promise.
Costa Rica's sustainability: towards complete decarbonization
Building on these advances, Costa Rica is continuing its National Decarbonization Plan, an ambitious commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This plan is based on electric mobility, reforestation, and sustainable management of natural resources.
By combining innovation, preservation, and long-term vision, Costa Rica's sustainability stands as an inspiring example for the rest of the world, reminding us that harmonious development between humans and nature is not only possible, but already underway.
