Sustainable tourism in Costa Rica: an ecological model unique in the world
The creation of national parks and nature reserves quickly became an exemplary way to combine biodiversity conservation and visitor experiences. Today, the country counts 152 protected areas, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These protected zones cover nearly 25% of Costa Rica’s land area and host around 5% of the planet’s biodiversity, an incredible figure for such a small country!

Costa Rica, often presented as a global showcase for ecotourism, devotes more than a quarter of its territory to nature conservation. Its 30 national parks, true sanctuaries of biodiversity, are home to more than 5% of the species recorded on the planet.

Since the early 2010s, Costa Rica has regularly exceeded 98% of its electricity coming from renewable sources. This result places it alongside pioneering countries such as Norway, Scotland, and Uruguay among the cleanest nations in the world (source: Climate Council, 2019).
